After calling to the bar in 2005, Alwin has developed a civil practice with an emphasis on land, building management and personal injuries matters. Notable recent cases include Pang Kam Chuen v Pang Kam Bor [2026] 1 HKLRD 261 (CA – allowed appeal on ‘plainly wrong’ findings of facts), Yu Kwok Wa v China Telecom Global Ltd [2023] 1 HKLRD 1043 (CA – whether ECC ‘accident’ can be an ‘internal accident’, i.e. stroke suffered in the office), and Chan San v Hans Li [2020] HKCA 501, [2019] HKCFI 714 (trial and appeal on adverse possession of land, partly of which a “private” road built by the squatter).
Apart from his practice as a barrister, he is Principal Lecturer at the Faculty of Law of the University of Hong Kong. Apart from teaching primarily on land-related courses, Alwin has engaged in extensive legal research projects: ‘Private Takings of Land for Urban Redevelopment: A Tale of Two Cities‘ (2021) 69 (2) The American Journal of Comparative Law 295, “The Social Good Shortfall: Reframing Takings Doctrine for Housing-Scarce Cities” (2026) The Asian Business Lawyer, Vol. 37, pp 161-206. Alwin was also a consultant to the Task Force for the Study on Tenancy Control of Subdivided Units in 2020-21, and the recommendations were largely adopted in the Landlord and Tenant (Consolidation) Amendment Bill 2021, which is now Part IVA of the LTCO. Further, he is a co-author of the new volume (Vol. 18(1)) on Conveyancing in the Halsbury Laws of Hong Kong, and is an annotator for the Annotated Ordinance of Hong Kong: Conveyancing and Property Ordinance (Cap 219).
Alwin also serves the legal profession as an examiner for the Law Society of Hong Kong’s Overseas Lawyers Qualification Examination (OLQE) Head I (Conveyancing), the PCEA Conversion Exam in Hong Kong Land Law, and as an assessor on the Higher Rights of Assessment Board.
